The video work portrays a colorless flag, upside down and waving, floating in the depths of the Venezuelan sea. The flag is immersed in the waters and is emptied of its symbolic value to become a silhouette, devoid of a defined identity. By removing its semantic content from the flag, the artist reflects on the theme of identity and transforms a national symbol into an ephemeral and metaphorical image that seems to dissolve in water. The work was presented in 2011 in the “Terre Vulnerabili” exhibition at the Hangar Bicocca in Milan with many cemetery candles around it; the number was then decreased in an installation in Portugal (2018), until the work was presented with a single candle cemetery placed in the center, at the Biennale de Habana (2019). The piece of music played in the background is titled “SØLV”, by Sinikka Langeland, and is taken from the 2006 album “Starflower”.
Il lavoro video ritrae una bandiera incolore, capovolta e ondeggiante, che fluttua nelle profondità del mare del Venezuela. Immersa nelle acque, la bandiera viene svuotata del proprio valore simbolico per diventare una sagoma, priva di un’identità definita. Sottraendo alla bandiera il proprio contenuto semantico, l’artista riflette sul tema dell’identità e trasforma un simbolo nazionale in un’immagine effimera e metaforica che sembra dissolversi nell’acqua. L’opera è stata presenta nel 2011 all’interno della mostra “Terre Vulnerabili” all’Hangar Bicocca di Milano con tantissime candele cimiteriali intorno; il numero è poi diminuito in un allestimento in Portogallo (2018) fino a che l’opera è stata presentata con una sola candela cimiteriale posta al centro, alla Biennale de Habana (2019). Il brano musicale riprodotto in sottofondo si intitola “SØLV”, di Sinikka Langeland, ed è tratto dal disco “Starflower” del 2006.
Bruna Esposito
Bruna Esposito was born in 1960 in Rome, where she currently lives and works. She graduated from the IVth Liceo Artistico Statale in 1979, in Rome, she studied with the painter Carmengloria Morales; in New York she lived and studied aerial dance with Batya Zamir in the early eighties and in 1984 she won the ISP of the Whitney Museum of American Art. She moved to West Berlin and in 1987 and 1988 she received two scholarships for the project “Two public toilets to compost”, by the I.B.A. Berlin. Among the main prizes and awards received are: Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale for the dAPPERTutto Pavilion with other Italian artists (1999), PS1 Award, New York (1999); Award for young Italian art, National Center for Contemporary Arts in Rome (2000); Prize selection of the Chamber of Deputies 150th of the Unification of Italy, Montecitorio, Rome (2001); IX edition of the Italian Council, Directorate General for Contemporary Creativity, MIC, Rome (2020); 62nd edition of the Termoli Prize, MACTE, Termoli (2021). Bruna Esposito has participated in the following national and international exhibitions: Quadrennial of Rome (2021 - 2008 - 1996); XIII Biennial of Havana, Cuba (2019); XIII International Biennial of Cuenca, Ecuador (2016); Prospect 1, New Orleans, USA (2008); Gwangju Biennial, South Korea (2004); The Venice Biennale (2005 - 1999); Istanbul Biennial, Turkey (2003); Sonsbeek9, Arnhem, The Netherlands (2001); Documenta X, Kassel, Germany (1997). During her career, Bruna Esposito has had the following teaching experiences: Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, Brera, Frosinone and L'Aquila (Techniques and sculpture), 2012-2023; “Artista chiama Artista”, Rome Quadrennial Foundation, Rome, 2010; Rhode Island School of Design, European Honor Program, Rome (Lectures and reviews), 1990-2019.
Bruna Esposito è nata nel 1960 a Roma, dove attualmente vive e lavora. Diplomata al IV° Liceo Artistico Statale nel 1979, a Roma, studia con la pittrice Carmengloria Morales; a New York vive e studia danza aerea con Batya Zamir nei primi anni ottanta e nel 1984 vince il ISP del Whitney Museum of American Art. Si trasferisce a Berlino Ovest e nel 1987 e 1988 riceve due borse di studio per il progetto “Due gabinetti pubblici a compost”, dall’I.B.A. Berlin. Tra i principali premi e riconoscimenti ricevuti si ricordano: Leone d'Oro della Biennale di Venezia per il Padiglione dAPPERTutto con altre artiste italiane (1999); Premio PS1, New York (1999); Premio per la giovane arte italiana, Centro nazionale per le Arti Contemporanee a Roma (2000); selezione Premio della Camera dei Deputati 150° dell’Unità d’Italia, Montecitorio, Roma (2001); IX edizione Italian Council, Direzione Generale Creatività Contemporanea, MIC, Roma (2020); 62° edizione Premio Termoli, MACTE, Termoli (2021).
