Right from the title, “Centro di Permanenza temporanea” refers to the tragedy of immigration today: the video work shows the fate of a group of migrants who, in an orderly fashion, walk along an airport runway towards an airplane ladder. By following their faces with the camera, and the detail of the clothes, the artist's eye accompanies us in the ascent of these steps. The stairway fills up, the migrants pile up until they stop as there is no plane waiting for them. The stairway is in fact isolated in the center of the airport runway. Paci makes the viewer participate in the sense of uncertainty and suspension, a real limbo capable of opening a reflection on the drama that some human beings find themselves experiencing every day. The work, both in its video and photographic version, stages the condition of waiting and precariousness of those who face long journeys to reach our country and who, without documents, remain confined in temporary centers to be repatriated. With this work from 2007, the artist, without making judgments, offers the visitor a picture of the political and social transformations, resulting to this day still relevant.
“Centro di Permanenza temporanea” fa riferimento, fin dal titolo, al dramma dell’immigrazione dei giorni nostri: il lavoro video mostra le sorti di un gruppo di migranti che, ordinatamente, cammina sulla pista di un aeroporto verso la scala di un aereo. Seguendo con la telecamera i loro volti, e il dettaglio degli abiti, l’occhio dell’artista ci accompagna nella salita di questi gradini. La scala si riempie, i migranti si ammassano fino a bloccarsi: ad attenderli non c’è nessun aereo. La scala è isolata al centro della pista dell’aeroporto. Paci rende lo spettatore partecipe del senso di incertezza e sospensione, un vero e proprio limbo capace di aprire una riflessione sul dramma che, ogni giorno, alcuni essere umani si trovano a vivere. L’opera, nella sua versione video e in quella fotografica, mette in scena la condizione di attesa e precarietà di coloro che affrontano lunghi viaggi per raggiungere il nostro paese e che, sprovvisti di documenti, rimangono confinati nei Centri di permanenza temporanea, in attesa di essere rimpatriati. Con questo lavoro del 2007 l’artista, senza dare giudizi, offre al visitatore un quadro delle trasformazioni politiche e sociali e risulta, ad oggi, sempre attuale.
Adrian Paci
Adrian Paci (born in Scutari, Albania in 1969) studied painting at the Accademia of Fine Arts of Tirana. In 1997 he moved to Milan, where he lives and works. During his artistic career he has had solo exhibitions in various institutions international such as Museum of arts, Haifa (2022); Kunsthalle, Krems (2019); National Gallery of Arts, Tirana (2019); Cloisters of Sant'Eustorgio, Milan (2017) Museo Novecento, Florence (2017); MAC, Musée d'Art Contemporain de Montreal (2014); Pavilion of Contemporary Art – PAC, Milan (2014); Jeu de Paume, Paris (2013); National Gallery of Kosovo, Pristina (2012); Kunsthaus Zurich, Zurich (2010); Bloomberg Space, London (2010); The Center for Contemporary Art – CCA, Tel Aviv (2009); Museum am Ostwall, Dortmund (2007); MoMA PS1, New York (2006) and Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston (2005). Among the various group exhibitions, Adrian Paci's works have been exhibited in the 14th Architecture Biennale – La Biennale di Venezia (2014); in the 48th year-but and in the 51st edition of the International Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia (respectively in 1999 and 2005); at the 15th Sydney Biennale (2006); in the 15th Rome Quadrennial, where he won first prize (2008); in the Lyon Biennial (2009); and in the fourth the Thessaloniki Biennale (2013). His works can be found in numerous public and private collections such as Metropolitan Museum, New York, Museum of Modern Art, New York, Musée d’Art Contemporain de Montréal, Centre Pompidou, Paris, Israel Museum, Jerusalem, MAXXI, Rome, Fundacio Caixa, Barcelona, Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Kunsthaus Zürich, Zurich, UBS Art Collection, London, Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami, New York Public Library, New York, Solomon Guggenheim Foundation, New York, Seattle Art Museum, Seattle. Adrian Paci teaches painting and visual arts at the Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti, NABA, Milan. He taught art subjects at the Carrara Academy of Fine Arts, Bergamo (2002 - 2006), IUAV, Venice (2003 - 2015), EPFL Lausanne (2020 - 2021) and held art lessons and workshops in various Universities, Academic and artistic institutions in various countries of the world.
