“1XUnknown (1942-2018, to Fortress Europe with Love)” is a series of 21 short videos recorded between 2012 and 2018 documenting the Atlantic Wall defensive line. The Atlantic Wall (1942-1944) is a series of about 15,000 fortifications built by the Third Reich across the European Atlantic coast (from the Pyrénées to Norway), with the purpose of defending Fortress Europe. The Third Reich turned the whole European Atlantic coast into a military construction site, closed off to everyone. This waste of economic resources and labor forces was a colossal endeavor, destined to fail, which was never actually completed. Each of the bunkers is a solid form of reinforced concrete without foundations, made by pouring the mix into large molds, in a single hours-long operation so there would be no interruption, as any joint would have been a weak point. The lack of foundation allowed the structure to be moved and displaced by the impact of an attack. Over time, none of the Atlantic Wall blockhouses have been demolished, and local inhabitants and administrations have given them various functions: museums, annexes, storage rooms, B&Bs, rocks, landmarks. The project documents different typologies of blockhouses and focuses on the ways each one has been transformed. Blockhouses are recognized as sculptures and analyzed through their spatial presence. The project is also a document showing the architecture of the Atlantic Wall, taken before its complete disappearance.
“1XUnknown (1942-2018, to Fortress Europe with Love)” è una serie di 21 video brevi realizzati tra il 2012 e il 2018 percorrendo la linea difensiva Atlantic Wall (1942-1944): circa 15.000 fortificazioni costruite dal Terzo Reich lungo la costa atlantica europea (dai Pirenei alla Norvegia) con lo scopo di difendere la “Fortezza Europa”. Per tre anni il Terzo Reich trasformò l’intera costa atlantica in un cantiere militare negando a chiunque l’accesso al mare. Questo dispendio di risorse umane ed economiche fu un’impresa colossale destinata a fallire e che non fu mai completata. Ogni bunker fu costruito come un solido di cemento armato privo di fondamenta, realizzato colando il materiale dentro grandi casseforme in un’unica operazione per evitare le interruzioni che avrebbero indebolito la fortificazione. L’assenza di fondamenta consentiva alle strutture di spostarsi senza spezzarsi dopo un attacco di artiglieria pesante. Col tempo, le fortificazioni dell’Atlantic Wall non sono state demolite. Gli abitanti e le amministrazioni locali hanno dato a queste varie funzioni: musei, annessi, magazzini, B&B, rocce. Questo progetto documenta diverse tipologie di casematte concentrandosi sui modi in cui ciascuna si è trasformata. Ogni bunker è riconosciuto come una scultura e analizzato attraverso la sua presenza spaziale. Questo progetto è anche un documento che mostra le architetture dell’Atlantic Wall prima della loro completa sparizione.

Margherita Moscardini is an Italian artist who investigates the relationships between transformational processes in the urban, social and natural orders of specific geographies. Her practice favours long-term projects developed through large-scale works, drawings, writings, scale models, and video-documents. Her projects include “Istanbul City Hills_On the Natural History of Dispersion and States of Aggregation” which was carried out in Turkey during 2013; “1XUnknown (1942-2018, to Fortress Europe with Love)”, developed between 2012 and 2018 across the European Atlantic coast and “The Fountains of Za’atari” (2016, ongoing) starting from Za’atari Refugee Camp in Jordan. Her work has been presented through lectures and exhibitions in different venues such as: Italian Academy for Advanced Studies in America, Columbia University New York; ISCP and SVA, New York (USA); SongEun ArtSpace and MMCA, Seoul (South Korea); Collezione Maramotti, Reggio Emilia; MAMbo, Bologna; Fondazione Pastificio Cerere, Palazzo delle Esposizioni, MAXXI and MACRO, Rome; MADRE, Naples (Italy).
Margherita Moscardini è un’artista nata in Italia che indaga le relazioni tra i processi di trasformazione di ordine urbano, sociale e naturale di specifiche geografie ritenute paradigmatiche. La sua pratica privilegia progetti a lungo termine che sviluppa attraverso lavori in larga scala, disegni, scritti, sculture e video. Tra i suoi lavori, “Istanbul City Hills_On the Natural History of Dispersion and States of Aggregation”, realizzato in Turchia nel corso del 2013; “1XUnknown (1942-2018, to Fortress Europe with Love)”, sviluppato tra il 2012 e il 2018 lungo la costa atlantica europea e “The Fountains of Za’atari” (2017, in corso), a partire dal campo per rifugiati di Za’atari in Giordania. Il suo lavoro è stato presentato attraverso mostre e conferenze in diversi contesti, tra cui: Italian Academy for Advanced Studies in America, Columbia University New York; ISCP e SVA, New York (USA); SongEun ArtSpace e MMCA, Seoul (Corea); Collezione Maramotti, Reggio Emilia; MAMbo, Bologna; Fondazione Pastificio Cerere, Palazzo delle Esposizioni, MAXXI e MACRO, Roma; MADRE, Napoli.
