“NYsferatu- Symphony of a Century” was created in collaboration with the New York-based nonprofit More Art through a series of workshops with migrants and new New Yorkers between 2015 and 2017. The project is a rotoscoped reconstruction of Friedrich W. Murnau's seminal 1922 film “Nosferatu”, itself an adaptation of Bram Stoker's “Dracula”. Every background scene was entirely redrawn to set the film in present-day New York City. Mastrovito and a team of twelve artists drew each background three times to replicate the flickering effect of early motion pictures. The film is accompanied by an original score composed by Simone Giuliani. Reversing the original film, “NYsferatu'' challenges the classic interpretation of the vampire, seen here as the prototypical outsider, and addresses the many obstacles faced by immigrants who often escape war and hardship in their homeland and then face challenges such as economic exploitation, discrimination, and xenophobia in their new country. On a technical level, “NYsferatu - Symphony of a Century” was made with approximately 35,000 rotoscoped drawings. Rotoscoping is an animation technique in which the draftsman traces frames of real scenes shot with a camera, resulting in fluid yet vibrant movement, reminiscent among other things of the "flickering" of early silent films.
“NYsferatu - Symphony of a Century” nasce in collaborazione con la no-profit newyorkese More Art attraverso una serie di workshop con migranti e nuovi new yorkers tra il 2015 ed il 2017. Il progetto è una ricostruzione al rotoscopio del film fondamentale di Friedrich W. Murnau del 1922, “Nosferatu”, a sua volta un adattamento di “Dracula” di Bram Stoker. Ogni scena di sfondo è stata interamente ridisegnata per ambientare il film nella New York di oggi. Mastrovito e un team di dodici artisti hanno disegnato ogni sfondo tre volte per replicare l'effetto tremolante delle prime pellicole cinematografiche. Il film è accompagnato da una colonna sonora originale composta da Simone Giuliani. Ribaltando il film originale, “NYsferatu” mette in discussione l'interpretazione classica del vampiro, visto qui come il prototipo dell'outsider, e affronta i molti ostacoli incontrati dagli immigrati che spesso sfuggono alla guerra e alle difficoltà in patria per poi affrontare sfide come lo sfruttamento economico, la discriminazione e la xenofobia nel loro nuovo Paese. A livello tecnico “NYsferatu - Symphony of a Century” è stato realizzato con circa 35.000 disegni in rotoscoping, tecnica d’animazione in cui il disegnatore ricalca i fotogrammi di scene reali girate con una telecamera, ottenendo come risultato un movimento fluido e al contempo vibrante, che ricorda tra l’altro il “flickering” dei primi anni del cinema muto.

Andrea Mastrovito, born in Bergamo in 1978, lives and works in New York. He graduated from the G. Carrara Academy of Bergamo in 2001 and has won several awards including: New York Prize (2007), Moroso Prize (2012), Premio Ermanno Casoli (2016), Italian Council (2019), Prix Plantagenet and Premio Icona (2021), PAC (2022). His works have been exhibited in major national and international museums, including: MAXXI-Museo nazionale delle arti del XXI secolo, MACRO and Palazzo delle Esposizioni, Rome; MART, Rovereto; Centro Pecci, Prato; Belvedere 21, Vienna; MUDAC, Lausanne; MUDAM, Luxembourg; Queens Museum and Museum of Arts and Design, New York. Andrea Mastrovito was the first contemporary artist to have a solo exhibition at the Museo del Novecento, Milan, in 2011. Recent museum solo shows include "Yo Lo Vi", Proa21, Buenos Aires (2022); "Strange Days", Laznia Center, Gdansk (2021); "I Am Not Legend", Museo del Novecento e del Contemporaneo di Palazzo Fabroni, Pistoia (2020); "Very Bad Things", National Gallery of Modern Art, Rome (2019); "Le Monde est Une Invention sans Futur", Fondation Bullukian, Lyon (2019); "Symphonie cines Jahrhunderts", Kunsthalle Dominikanerkirche, Osnabruck (2018); "At the end of the line", GAMeC, Bergamo (2014). In 2017, he made his debut as a film director with the animated feature film "NYsferatu - Symphony of a Century", followed by the sequel, "I Am Not Legend", in 2020: both were screened in various cultural realities, foundations, cinemas and festivals around the world. Since 2014, he has made a series of permanent public installations in Italy, France, Belgium and the United States. He has given numerous public lectures in various institutions and academies in Italy and abroad. Andrea Mastrovito is represented by Wilde Gallery (Geneva, Basel, Zurich), at which he held solo exhibitions in 2012, 2015, 2018, and 2021, and Galleria Michela Rizzo, Venice, where he opened his first solo show in 2021.

Carrara di Bergamo nel 2001, ha vinto diversi premi tra cui: New York Prize (2007), Moroso Prize (2012), Premio Ermanno Casoli (2016), Italian Council (2019), Prix Plantagenet e Premio Icona (2021), PAC (2022). Dal 2014 ha realizzato una serie di interventi pubblici permanenti in Italia, Francia, Belgio e Stati Uniti. Ha tenuto numerose conferenze pubbliche in diverse istituzioni e accademie, in Italia e all’estero. Andrea Mastrovito è rappresentato da Wilde Gallery (Ginevra, Basilea, Zurigo), presso la quale ha tenuto mostre personali nel 2012, 2015, 2018 e 2021, e dalla Galleria Michela Rizzo, Venezia, dove ha inaugurato il suo primo solo show nel 2021.
