Ten golden ingots, each inscribed with the word "passing," form a work with the same name. The word carries different meanings: passage, transition, disappearance, death, donation, ford, accidental, racial identity change. The work alludes in particular to the financial and emotional cost of moving in a world ever more determined by geopolitical and metaphorical borders, around which speculation and profit are dramatically increasing. The work alludes to the financial and emotional cost of being able to move in a world increasingly defined by geopolitical as well as metaphorical boundaries, around which speculation and profit are growing more and more vertiginously. Fiamma Montezemolo, thanks to her dual training, works at the intersection between art and contemporary anthropology. He creates interdisciplinary and cross-genre site-specific interventions that are based on the observation of lands and border areas, designing a set of intermediate practices that reflect on the mobility of experience, mediation, disciplinary negotiations and geopolitical articulations. The series in the exhibition is a special edition created on the occasion of the project. The proceeds from the sale will be donated to Mediterranea/Saving Humans and Progetto 20K.
Dieci lingotti d'oro, ognuno con incisa nella parte superiore la parola "passing”, formano un'opera unica con il medesimo titolo. La parola scelta da Montezemolo ha diversi significati in inglese come: passaggio, transizione, scomparsa, morte, donazione, guado, accidentale, cambio di identità razziale. L'opera vuole alludere al costo – finanziario ed emotivo – di riuscire a muoversi in un mondo sempre più definito da confini geopolitici oltre che metaforici, attorno ai quali la speculazione e il profitto aumentano sempre più vertiginosamente. Fiamma Montezemolo, grazie alla sua doppia formazione, lavora all’intersezione tra l’arte e l’antropologia contemporanea. Crea interventi site-specific interdisciplinari e cross-genere che si basano sull’osservazione delle terre e delle zone di confine, e utilizza pratiche intermedie che riflettono sulla mobilità dell'esperienza, della mediazione, delle negoziazioni disciplinari e delle articolazioni geopolitiche. La serie presente in mostra è un’edizione speciale realizzata in occasione del progetto. Il ricavato ottenuto dalla vendita sarà devoluto a Mediterranea/Saving Humans e Progetto 20K.
Fiamma Montezemolo
Fiamma Montezemolo is both an artist (MFA, San Francisco Art Institute) and an anthropologist (PhD, University Orientale of Naples). She is an established scholar in border studies and Professor in the Department of Cinema & Digital Media at the University of California, Davis. She has exhibited in various institutions among the most recent: Laboratorio Arte Alameda, Mexico City (2019), Herbert Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University (2019), Jewish Museum, Munich (2019), The National Gallery, Rome (2019), Headlands Center for the Arts, California (2018), ASU Art Museum, Arizona (2019), Kadist Art Foundation, San Francisco (2016), Armory Center for the Arts, Los Angeles (2014). She is represented by Magazzino gallery in Rome. She is widely published and the author of two monographs on Zapatismo and on Chicano identity, as well as co-author (with Rene' Peralta and Heriberto Yepez) of Here is Tijuana (Blackdog Publishing, London, 2006) and co- editor (with Josh Kun) of Tijuana Dreaming, Life and Art at the Global border (Duke U. Press, 2012). In 2022 she was awarded the Italian Council Minister of Culture Contemporary Art award in collaboration with On Public and Nero Editions.
Fiamma Montezemolo è sia un'artista (MFA, San Francisco Art Institute) che un'antropologa (PhD, Università Orientale di Napoli). È un'affermata studiosa di studi di frontiera e professoressa presso il Dipartimento di cinema e media digitali dell'Università della California, Davis. Ha esposto in diverse istituzioni, tra le mostre più recenti si ricordano quelle presso: Laboratorio Arte Alameda, Città del Messico (2019), Herbert Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University (2019), Jewish Museum, Monaco di Baviera (2019), La Galleria Nazionale, Roma (2019), Headlands Center for the Arts, California (2018), ASU Art Museum, Arizona (2019), Kadist Art Foundation, San Francisco (2016), Armory Center for the Arts, Los Angeles (2014). È rappresentata dalla galleria Magazzino di Roma. È ampiamente pubblicata ed è autrice di due monografie, sullo Zapatismo e sull’identità Chicana, nonché coautrice (con Rene' Peralta e Heriberto Yepez) di Here is Tijuana (Blackdog Publishing, Londra, 2006) e co-editore (con Josh Kun) di Tijuana Dreaming, Life and Art at the Global border (Duke U. Press, 2012). Nel 2022 le è stato conferito il premio Arte Contemporanea del Ministro della Cultura del Consiglio Italiano in collaborazione con On Public e Nero Editions.
