Language as a political and emotional space and as an aesthetic tool is at the core of Muna Mussie’s project. She sews a book as a form of collective creation, as a place and “social fabric” made up of the dialogue between women from different backgrounds and currently living in Bologna: Nigeria, Cameroon, Iran, Somalia, Albania, Guinea, Algeria, China, Russia, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Morocco, Brazil, Argentina, Palestine, Italy, Congo, Moldova. Mussie opens the dialogues by placing the book as the thematic focus, and each woman is free to answer questions or address topics of her own. Each one answering about herself allows light to be shed on the other, to question her, explain her, paraphrase her, contradict her, call her out, accompany her. “Punteggiatura” (‘Punctuation’), is the imaginative space that, through language and gesture, gives birth to the common good. It is a discourse put into practice, translated into embroidery, in relationship with dexterity and manual skills, which performs and handles thoughts, tracing and sewing its own coordinates. “Punteggiatura”, conceived for “Atlas of Transitions Biennale - Right to the City”, Bologna 2018, was realized in collaboration with Scuola delle Donne | Pilastro (CESD), Biblioteca Italiana delle Donne.
La lingua come spazio politico-affettivo e come materiale estetico è alla base dell’opera di Muna Mussie. L’artista concepisce la creazione collettiva di un libro di stoffa, considerandolo come un vero e proprio luogo, un “tessuto sociale” che si costruisce grazie al dialogo con un nucleo di donne di differenti provenienze e residenti a Bologna: Nigeria, Camerun, Iran, Somalia, Albania, Guinea, Algeria, Cina, Russia, Eritrea, Etiopia, Marocco, Brasile, Argentina, Palestina, Italia, Congo, Moldavia. Mussie apre i dialoghi ponendo come centro tematico il libro e ogni donna è libera di rispondere alle domande o di trattare argomenti propri. Ognuna rispondendo di sé permette di fare luce sull’altra, di interrogarla, spiegarla, parafrasarla, contraddirla, chiamarla, accompagnarla. “Punteggiatura” è una creazione immaginaria attraversata dalla lingua, dal filo di un discorso emotivo, gestuale e funzionale alla nascita della cosa comune. È un discorso che si mette in pratica, si autotraduce in ricamo, entra in dialogo con la manualità, la manodopera, agisce e maneggia pensieri, traccia le sue coordinate, le cuce. L’opera “Punteggiatura”, concepita per “Atlas of Transitions Biennale - Right to the City”, Bologna 2018, è stata realizzata in collaborazione con Scuola delle Donne | Pilastro (CESD), Biblioteca Italiana delle Donne.
Muna Mussie
Muna Mussie (Eritrea, 1978) is an artist and performer based in Bologna. She investigates the performing arts and the scenic languages to give shape to the tension that arises between different expressive poles – private and public, memory and oblivion, visible and invisible - through gesture, vision and word. She began her artistic career in 1998, as actress and performer with Teatrino Clandestino. In 2002 she attended the European advanced training course for the actor, led by Cesare Ronconi. From 2001 to 2005 she was an active part in the research collective Open. Among her recent performances and installations: “Oblio/Pianto del Muro” (2022), “PERSONA” (2022), “Bientôt l’été” (2021), “PF DJ” (2021), “Oblio” (2021), “Curva Cieca” (2021), “Curva” (2019), “Oasi” (2018), “Milite Ignoto” (2015). Among her recent exhibitions: “ዳና ቦሎኛ | بولونیا شارع | Bologna St. 173”, “Punteggiatura” (2018).

Muna Mussie (Eritrea, 1978) è un’artista e performer di base a Bologna. Il suo lavoro si muove tra gesto, visione e parola, e indaga i linguaggi della scena e delle performing arts per dare forma alla tensione che scaturisce tra differenti poli espressivi, privato e pubblico, memoria e oblio, visibile e invisibile. Inizia il suo percorso artistico nel 1998 formandosi e lavorando come attrice e performer con Teatrino Clandestino. Nel 2002 frequenta il Corso Europeo di alta formazione per l’attore, condotto da Cesare Ronconi. Dal 2001 al 2005 è parte fondante del collettivo di ricerca Open. Tra le performance e installazioni recenti: “Oblio/Pianto del Muro” (2022), “PERSONA” (2022), “Bientôt l’été” (2021), “PF DJ” (2021), “Oblio” (2021), “Curva Cieca” (2021), “Curva” (2019), “Oasi” (2018), “Milite Ignoto” (2015).
