ARTS ON THE MOVE

Me as a Star (Vallée Etroite) is a video performance that Cleo Fariselli realized in Valle Stretta, near Bardonecchia. In the sequence of images that make up the work, nothing seems to be happening. A partially snow-covered mountain landscape merges with an extremely clear daytime sky. On the line separating earth from sky, however, a shimmering element draws the viewer's attention. The artist, wearing a mirroring costume made by materials that reflect the sun light moves dancing in an attempt to be a star. Fariselli accomplishes a chameleon-like gesture through which the human figure, harmoniously camouflaged with the cosmos and totally other than itself, is charged with a positive image, whose brilliance becomes synonymous with light, energy and life force. The work is inspired by the phenomenon of "Hessdalen," or the appearance in various parts of the world of lights with such varied and bizarre characteristics that their origin is still a mystery. "Over the years my family and I have followed the Hessdalen phenomenon in different and discontinuous ways that have generated in us reflections, fantasies, observations, projects, travels, music, objects, actions still and moving images. In this performance I dance wearing a costume made by materials that reflect the sun light. Dancing far enough from the video-camera I appear as a shiny sparkling dot, indistinguishable as a person. Light is the prerequisite to the visual existence of the world, an immense subject that fascinates me but which also inspires awe in me. For this reason, perhaps, I have always approached it laterally, through forms traceable to concrete elements, such as a lamppost or a reflective costume. I am moved by the idea of a particular light, which from a phenomenon becomes an individual - the 'little light in the distance' that recurs in fairy tales, an archetype of existence. “Me as a Star (Vallée Etroite)” è una video performance che Cleo Fariselli ha realizzato in Valle Stretta, nei pressi di Bardonecchia (Torino). Nella sequenza di immagini che compongono il lavoro, all’apparenza nulla sembra accadere. Un paesaggio montano parzialmente innevato si fonde con un cielo diurno estremamente limpido. Sulla linea di confine che separa la terra dal cielo, un elemento luccicante attira però l’attenzione di chi osserva. L’artista, vestita di un abito specchio che riflette la luce del sole, si muove danzando nel tentativo di essere una stella. Fariselli porta a compimento un gesto camaleontico attraverso il quale la figura umana, mimetizzata armoniosamente con il cosmo e totalmente altro da sé, si carica di un’immagine positiva, la cui brillantezza diventa sinonimo di luce, energia e forza vitale. Il lavoro è ispirato dal fenomeno di “Hessdalen”, ossia l’apparizione in varie parti del mondo di luci dalle caratteristiche talmente varie e bizzarre da rendere la loro origine ancora un mistero. “Nel corso degli anni io e la mia famiglia abbiamo seguito il fenomeno di Hessdalen in modi diversi e discontinui che hanno generato in noi riflessioni, fantasie, osservazioni, progetti, viaggi, musica, oggetti, azioni, immagini fisse e in movimento. In questa performance ballo indossando un costume fatto di materiali che riflettono la luce del sole. Ballando abbastanza lontano dalla videocamera appaio come un puntino luccicante e scintillante, indistinguibile come persona. La luce è il presupposto all’esistenza visiva del mondo, un tema immenso di cui subisco il fascino ma che mi incute anche soggezione. Per questo, forse, l’ho sempre avvicinata lateralmente, attraverso forme riconducibili a elementi concreti, come un lampione o un costume riflettente. Mi commuove l’idea di una luce particolare, che da fenomeno si fa individuo, la ‘lucina in lontananza’ che ricorre nelle fiabe, un archetipo dell’esistenza.” (Cleo Fariselli)
