Could a story, lost between borders and born far away, be displaced and performed on a different stage, a city strictly connected to another National History? With this question in mind, the artist held a collective film workshop in Turin, the city that was the first capital of Italy, involving refugees and people with a migrant background. Together they began to weave a story that has its roots in the films each of them loved during their childhood. These cinematographic memories have become a field of exchange and negotiation to question and rewrite the places where we live together today. In the video the squares and monuments of Turin with their history, are transformed into a theater that hosts the stories of the participants in the workshop and convey them from a personal to a symbolic and social dimension. Comments the artist, "Eighteen people have signed up for the ‘Talking About Visibility’ collective film workshop, but many more stories are being shared. Each day is difficult to explain in a few lines, and I continue to reflect on the value of the actions we take and the stories we share in the course of our meetings. Recorded audio and moving images dilate and shrink time, where the picture is an opaque mirror, often without an image. I took the opportunity generated by the continuous discussion with workshop participants to reflect and understand how learning a language is not only through writing, but through what is needed, what is necessary to exist.”
Un racconto che è nato lontano, la cui origine è persa tra i confini delle geografie attraversate, può essere messo in scena in un altro teatro, dove le strade e le piazze sono indissolubilmente legate a una storia Nazionale? Per riflettere su questo interrogativo l’artista ha realizzato un laboratorio di cinema collettivo a Torino, città che fu la prima capitale d’Italia, lavorando con rifugiati e persone dal passato migratorio. Assieme hanno iniziato a intrecciare una storia che getta le sue radici nei film amati da ciascuno di loro durante l’infanzia. Queste memorie cinematografiche, in dialogo continuo, diventano qui un terreno di scambio e negoziazione per interrogare l’immaginario che scrive i luoghi del nostro odierno convivere: le piazze e i monumenti torinesi con la loro storia si trasformano in un teatro che accoglie i racconti dei partecipanti al laboratorio, e veicolano le narrazioni da una dimensione personale a una simbolica e sociale. Commenta l’artista: “Diciotto persone si sono iscritte al laboratorio di cinema collettivo ‘Talking About Visibility’, ma molte di più sono le storie che vengono condivise. Ogni giorno è difficile da spiegare in poche righe e io continuo a riflettere sul valore delle azioni che facciamo e delle storie che condividiamo nel corso dei nostri incontri. Audio registrato e immagini in movimento dilatano e restringono il tempo, dove il quadro è uno specchio opaco, spesso senza immagine. Ho colto l'opportunità generata dal continuo confronto con i partecipanti al laboratorio per riflettere e comprendere come l'imparare una lingua non passi solo attraverso la scrittura, ma attraverso ciò che serve, ciò che è necessario per esistere”.
Caterina Erica Shanta
Caterina Erica Shanta (Germany, 1986), based in Pordenone, Italy, is a visual artist and film director. She holds an MFA from IUAV University in Venice. She is currently collaborating with archivist and photographer Rawsht Twana on the “Twana Archive” project, supported by the Italian Council production grant (DGCC - Ministry of Culture). Caterina investigates images produced by others, to explore how these are connected to particular and traumatic contexts. Using mixed and re-edited material as video, footage and archival photos as main medium of expression and study field, her research is focused on the images’ redefinition proper of documentary languages. She has worked in collaboration with many different professionals such as architects, philosophers, scientists (cf. “Terre Emerse”, “Calante”), archivists, academics (cf. “Twana Archive Project”, “Palmyra”), historians and non-professionals (cf. “Misha Archive”, “A History About Silence”). The artist’s output practice often generates unpublished archives as a common collective workground, based on images, memories and experiences around particular and specific research subjects. She has also realized collective and social engaged projects, with the aim to reconnect storytellings to places and memories, trough practices based on laboratory, open calls and open participation projects (cf. “Talking About Visibility”, “Il Cielo Stellato”).
Caterina Erica Shanta (Germania, 1986) vive e lavora a Pordenone. Artista e regista, si è formata a Venezia dove ha ottenuto un Master in Arti Visive allo IUAV. Attualmente collabora con l’archivista e fotografo Rawsht Twana al progetto “Twana Archive”, sostenuto dal bando di produzione Italian Council (DGCC - Ministero della Cultura). Caterina Erica Shanta indaga le immagini prodotte da altri per esplorare come queste siano connesse a contesti particolari e traumatici. Utilizzando materiali misti e rielaborati come video, filmati e foto d'archivio quale principale mezzo di espressione e campo di studio, la sua ricerca si concentra sulla ridefinizione delle immagini proprie dei linguaggi documentari. Ha lavorato in collaborazione con diversi professionisti come architetti, filosofi, scienziati (cfr. “Terre Emerse”, “Calante”), archivisti, accademici (cfr. “Twana Archive Project”, “Palmyra”), storici e non (cfr. “Misha Archive”, “A History About Silence”). La pratica di produzione dell'artista genera spesso archivi inediti come terreno di lavoro comune, basato su immagini, ricordi ed esperienze intorno a particolari e specifici temi di ricerca. Ha inoltre realizzato progetti collettivi e di impegno sociale, con l'obiettivo di ricollegare le narrazioni a luoghi e memorie, attraverso pratiche di laboratorio, open call e progetti a partecipazione aperta (cfr. “Talking About Visibility”, “Il Cielo Stellato”).
